If you leave your door ajar, you’ll hear him whispering.
Netflix has officially set an August 28 release date for its adaptation of The Whisper Man, pairing the announcement with a set of unsettling images that suggest the film will be every bit as unsettling as Alex North’s best-selling novel that the film is based on.
The film follows a widowed crime writer whose world is shattered when his eight-year-old son vanishes into thin air. To find him, he is forced to bridge a bitter divide and turn to his estranged father—a retired detective with his own ghosts to face. Together, they set about unravelling a mystery inextricably linked to a decades-old cold case and the sinister legacy of a notorious serial killer known as “The Whisper Man.”
Helmed by James Ashcroft (The Rule of Jenny Pen, Coming Home in the Dark), the film is written by Ben Jacoby (The First Omen) and Chase Palmer (It), and produced by Anthony Russo, Joe Russo, Angela Russo-Otstot, Michael Disco and Kassee Whiting.
Netflix has assembled an absolute powerhouse cast for this project, including Robert De Niro (The Irishman, Goodfellas), Michelle Monaghan (Gone Baby Gone, “The White Lotus”), Adam Scott (“Severance”, Hokum), Hamish Linklater (“Midnight Mass”, Nickel Boys), Owen Teague (It, You Hurt My Feelings), Acston Luca Porto (Dora and the Search for Sol Dorado), and Will Brill (The Eyes of My Mother, Not Fade Away).
Executive producer Angela Russo-Otstot said: “AGBO is excited to be embarking on our sixth film with our incredible partners at Netflix. The Whisper Man is a gripping thriller, but at its core [it] is a poignant and complex story of father and sons. We are grateful to have one of the finest actors of his generation, Robert De Niro, anchoring that story and with the remarkable James Ashcroft directing.”
The Whisper Man marks the sixth collaboration between AGBO and Netflix, continuing the Russo brothers’ ongoing partnership with the streamer.
