‘You’re Dating a Narcissist’: Marisa Tomei Tackles Love, Lies, and Red Flags Aplenty in New Rom-Com

you're dating a narcissist trailer

The trailer has landed for You’re Dating a Narcissist, the feature debut from director Ann Marie Allison, a rom-com that promises laughs, heartbreak, and a healthy dose of “do not ignore the red flags!” The film will release in theaters this March 27.

Allison, who co-wrote the script with Jenna Milly, also serves as a producer alongside Jorge Garcia Castro, Chris Abernathy, and Eric Fleishman. The extensive ensemble cast is led by Marisa Tomei (My Cousin Vinny, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Far From Home), with Sherry Cola (Joyride, “Shrinking”), Ciara Bravo (Cherry), Marco Pigossi (Bone Lake, “Gen V”), and José María Yazpik (The Burning Plain, Madame Web) rounding out the lineup.

The premise centers on Judy, a sharp-tongued psychology professor obsessed with spotting narcissists, who discovers her daughter is marrying a man she’s just met. Flying across the country to prove he’s a fraud, Judy soon finds herself caught between saving her daughter’s heart and confronting her own long-buried vulnerabilities.

Allison drew on her own experiences for the film, reflecting, “In my twenties, I dated and almost married a narcissist. It was a two-year rollercoaster of super high highs and very low lows. When I finally recognised the pattern, everything clicked. I realised so many others had lived the same story: some tragic, some absurd, some laugh-out-loud ridiculous. That’s where this film was born.”

It’s all sugary pastels and rom-com charm until Judy steps in, reminding us that life (and love) has consequences, and it pays to be aware of them. Allison adds that the film is “about what it takes to crack open again after you’ve been hurt, to risk intimacy and being seen, to laugh at the madness instead of drowning in it. At its heart, this is a love story in all its messy forms—romantic, maternal, platonic.”

You’re Dating a Narcissist hits cinemas March 27, guaranteed to have audiences laughing, wincing, and perhaps spotting a red flag or two in their own love lives.
