Apple TV+ Reveals Trailer for Gothic Historical Series “The Essex Serpent”

Apple TV+ has today dropped the official trailer for its forthcoming limited series “The Essex Serpent,”  based on Sarah Perry’s bestselling sinuous historical fiction novel of the same name.

Directed by BAFTA Award-nominee Clio Barnard, from a screenplay written by BAFTA Award-nominee Anna Symon, this Victorian England-set series features a star-studded cast led by Emmy and SAG Award-winner Claire Danes and Emmy Award-nominee Tom Hiddleston. “The Essex Serpent” follows London widow Cora Seaborne (Danes) who moves to Essex to investigate reports of a mythical serpent. She forms a surprising bond of science and skepticism with the local pastor (Hiddleston), but when tragedy strikes, locals accuse her of attracting the creature. The cast is rounded out by other regular members including Frank Dillane, Clémence Poésy and Hayley Squires.

Perry’s novel was first released on 27 May 2016 and went on to win the British Book Awards for 2016 Book of the Year and Waterstones Book of the Year 2016.

Barnard and Symon also serve as executive producers on the show alongside Jamie Laurenson, Hakan Kousetta, Iain Canning, Emile Sherman and Patrick Walters. The series is produced for Apple TV+ by See-Saw Films.

“The Essex Serpent” will debut globally with the first two episodes on Friday, May 13, 2022, followed by one new episode weekly, every Friday through June 10. To tide you over until then, we’ll leave you with the aforementioned official trailer.
