Following the launch of their debut single ‘Just Another Rainbow’, which climbed to number 16 in the UK Singles Chart and went straight to number 1 in the sales, downloads, vinyl and physical singles charts, Manchester legends Liam Gallagher and John Squire have confirmed the official release date of their self-titled debut album. The LP will arrive this March 1st, with artwork created by Squire, and in anticipation of the release, from today fans can enjoy the duo’s second single, ‘Mars To Liverpool’ (listen here). And if that wasn’t enough for you, they have also shared details of their first UK tour as a duo, plus select shows in Ireland, France, Germany, Italy and the USA.
Commenting on what fans can expect from the impending album, Gallagher said,“I can’t wait for people to hear the album. I think the people that are into the Stone Roses and Oasis and that kinda thing, I think they’ll fucking love it. It’s spiritual, it’s crucial. LG x”
And commenting on the writing process, Squire added adds, “It was really inspiring to have those Knebworth gigs fresh in my mind as I started writing. Then it was a case of trying to steer it away from all being too rocky, and trying to mix up the sentiments as well. I like the way that in some parts, it’s quite melancholic and it can make you well up, but there are other parts that are kind of irreverent, rude or crude. There’s a little bit of everything in there, I think it’s a really good mix. I had a hunch that we’d sound good together, but I wasn’t prepared for it to be such a good fit.”
New single ‘Mars To Liverpool’ is everything you could hope for from the duo, serving up a romping brand of rock ‘n’ roll with a psychedelic ’60s edge. Squires weaves in another dose of the inventive guitar work that fans raved about when the first single dropped – chiming riffs, fluid classic rock solos – all wrapped around Liam’s soaring vocals. The song transcends its air of melancholy to deliver a soaring, crowd-pleasing anthem, as does the best of their work in their respective bands and solo careers. Judging by the first two harbingers of the duo’s collaboration, the LP and live experience is something worth getting very psyched up for.
Long-term friends with a mutual respect and admiration for each other’s work, the seeds of a collaboration were planted when John joined Liam on stage at his seminal Knebworth shows. Song ideas flowed thick and fast and the record took shape with a visceral intensity while they were in Los Angeles with renowned producer Greg Kurstin (who has worked with the likes of Paul McCartney, Foo Fighters and Gorrilaz and co-written various songs with Gallagher). Kurstin played bass throughout the record, while drums were performed by Joey Waronker (Beck, R.E.M., Atoms For Peace).
The album is now available to pre-order HERE. Physical formats include standard CD and vinyl, a Deluxe split-colour vinyl, a white vinyl stocked by HMV and select indie stores, and an Amazon exclusive orange EcoRecord vinyl.
