X-Men: Days of Future Past is Xciting

In the early 1960s legendary comic book creator Stan Lee devised a group of mutant superheros with extraordinary abilities. Over the next thirty years the X-Men universe expanded and introduced a host of new characters and with it some incredibly awesome superpowers as it continued to grow as one of Marvel comic’s most popular titles. However, it was not until the 1980s when the comic soared to the top. With some of the best known story arcs ever including The Dark Phoenix Saga, X-Men: God Loves, Man Kills and The Trial of Magneto, it would seem that fans simply couldn’t get enough.

Fast forward to recent times and there have been four X-Men movies to date: X-Men (2000), X2 (2003), X-Men: The Last Stand (2006) and the stunning X-Men: First Class (2011). So far fans have taken to these movies like a duck to water and have proven to perform well at the box office with X-Men: The Last Stand being the only instalment to receive mixed praise from fans and comic fanatics alike. So after an impressive recovery for the franchise with X-Men First Class the original director of the first two instalments Bryan Singer has stepped back into the directors seat for X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Inspired by another great story arc from the ’80s of the same name, Days of Future Past combines the cast of the first three films with the cast from First Class to bring us a truly outstanding action blockbuster. Written by Simon Kinberg (based on the story by Jane Goldman, Simon Kinberg and Matthew Vaughn), the film starts with Wolverine and the last few surviving X-men as they battle against machines who actively seek to find and slaughter mutants. In an effort to save their future, Professor Xavier sends Wolverine into the past in a desperate attempt to change the future.

At first, we were skeptical of the film but after watching the latest trailer (see below) we have no doubt this film is going to be awesome. But for those who are still in two minds about Days of Future Past we only recommend that you check out the latest trailer.

As you can see this film looks fantastic and we’re excited to see the return of Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellan, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Halle Berry, Ellen Page, Anna Paquin, Shawn Ashmore and Hugh Jackman. But considering how many characters are going to be in this movie non-comic book fans may be scratching thier head trying to work out who the new additions to the franchise are which is why we have put together this handy guide for you.

XMEN01

Evan Peters plays Pietro Maximoff. Known in the X-Men universe as Quicksilver, has the mutant power of super speed and is easily identified by his trademark white hair. Maximoff’s origins in the comics revealed that he is the son of Magneto but it is unknown if Days of Future past will go into this. However, what we do know from the latest trailer is that Quicksilver is drafted to join the x-men as they attempt to  break Magneto out of a secure prison deep underground the pentagon. Does this mean that there will tbe a father-son reunion on the horizon?

XMEN05

Omar Sy is playing Bishop, a mutant police officer from the future. Able to absorb energy and then discharge it through his hands Bishop is one tough cookie. However, what’s interesting about this character is that he can use the absorbed energy to grow stronger and heal himself. A perfect balance of muscle and brain-power, Bishop will no doubt serve as a worthy adversary when it comes to the sentinel war.

XMEN04

Mexican actor Adan Canto will be playing the mutant Sunspot. Just like Bishop, Sunspot absorbs energy to activate his power but from the sun. When fully powered up he turns into a black hole on fire and can fly as well as shoot solar blasts on command. He may look like a darker more vicious version of the Fantastic Four’s Human Torch but from the look of the recent trailer all of the Torch’s one-liners have been replaced with ferocity and impressive hand-to-hand combat skills.

XMEN03

Warpath is a Native American mutant who is played by Booboo Stewart. In the comics Warpath was at first against the X-Men as he held them responsible for his brother’s death but soon came to his senses and joined them as part of a spin-off group of heroes X-Force. As for his mutant powers, Warpath shares the same traits as Captain America, this super-human is highly skilled in hand-to-hand combat.

XMEN02

Clarice Ferguson aka Blink is played by Chinese movie star Binbing Fan. Teleportation is her mutant power and Blink is one of few mutants who could give Mystique a run for her money as her character is not only sexy but very dangerous as well. She can teleport her self and others at well and can charge projectiles making them teleport on impact. After seeing an impressive fight sequence showing the extent of her powers, Blink certainly likes to be part of the action.

That brings a close to our list of the newest additions to Fox’s X-Men Universe. But considering the fact that in the comic of Days of Future Past some major characters were killed off during this story arc so this leaves us thinking that if the film goes the same way, who will live and who will die? I guess we won’t find out until X-Men: Days of Future Past when it is finally released in cinemas across the UK on 22nd May 2014.
