Almost twenty years after directing his original Spider-Man trilogy, Sam Raimi is hinting that he might one day return to the Marvel universe. The director, whose films starred Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker, says the actor’s return in Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) showed there is still an appetite for his take on the character.
Raimi told the Associated Press that audiences responded strongly not only to Maguire, but also to the return of villains like Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin and Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus. “I think the kids would like to see him,” Raimi said, though he acknowledged that Marvel’s current Spider-Man films, which connect with the broader Avengers storyline, are thriving on their own. “I don’t think it makes sense right now to interrupt that run just to make another Spider-Man movie. But I’d love to do it. The day might come.”
Maguire’s casting in the early 2000s was not straightforward. The studio was initially hesitant, but a test screening revealed an actor who had physically transformed for the role and captured Peter Parker’s essence. Signing on for two sequels, Maguire earned $26 million—a figure equivalent to roughly $47 million today.
Before Raimi took over, Sony approached other directors, including David Fincher, who planned to cover Spider-Man’s origin story in the opening credits and focus on The Night Gwen Stacy Died storyline. Chris Columbus was also offered the job, but he chose to direct Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone instead. Raimi’s own lifelong passion for comics – he owns more than 25,000 collectibles – helped convince Sony he was the right fit.
After his trilogy, Raimi returned to the Marvel fold with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022), reuniting with Rachel McAdams. The pair are collaborating again on Send Help, now in theaters (our full review HERE).
While no official plans exist for a fourth Raimi-directed Spider-Man film, his comments suggest the possibility remains open—and fans of the original trilogy could one day see Maguire swinging through New York once more.
