In 2011, Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn brought us Drive, an American crime drama based on the book written by James Sallis. The film starred Ryan Gosling and it won Best Director Award at the Cannes Film Festival. Fast forward to 2013 and Refn and Gosling teamed up once again for Only God Forgives, a revenge thriller set in Thailand. So what is next for Refn?
If you answered horror then you’d be right! His next project, I Walk with the Dead is an all-female horror film which he will write with acclaimed UK playwright Polly Stenham. Although no plot details have been revealed other than it will be set in Miami, Refn has mentioned that his Drive star Carey Mulligan will play a central role. Knowing how much of a talented filmmaker he is, I have high hopes for this film. I Walk with the Dead is due for release in 2015.
Given his recent supernatural encounters it certainly is quite the surprise he has gone down this route so soon. In case you missed our recent chat with Refn, in which he described the strange events he witnessed, you might like to pop on over for a read of that here.
