INTERVIEW: Daniel André Talks Mordantly Morbid-Yet-Uplifting Romantic Comedy ‘RUNNING ON EMPTY’

Lionsgate is all geared up to release filmmaker, artist, and music producer Daniel André´s mordantly morbid romantic comedy, Running on Empty, a genre-blending work that delves into the complexities of embracing life in the face of mortality.

Written and directed by André and starring Keir Gilchrist (“Atypical”, It Follows), Lucy Hale (Truth or Dare, Scream 4), Francesca Eastwood (Old, Clawfoot), and the legendary American comedian Jim Gaffigan, Running on Empty chronicles the misadventures of Mortimer (Gilchrist), an eccentric yet astute young man residing in the San Fernando Valley of California. Mortimer’s life undergoes a radical transformation upon receiving some life-altering information, after which, he is ultimately driven to make the most of every day and sets out on a determined quest to find meaning in his existence. And, along the way, he discovers the girl of his dreams.

In anticipation of the film’s theatrical release on Friday, 9 August, and subsequent release on video on demand on 27 August, CinemaChords’ Howard Gorman spoke with André to gain insight into the film’s exploration of somber and controversial themes and how he found light in such dark subject matter to ultimately create a quirky meditation on mortality, purpose, and the resilience of the human spirit.
