He Robbed McDonald’s Through the Roof and Lived in a Toys “R” Us — Now It’s a Movie Starring Channing Tatum

Paramount Pictures has released the first trailer for Roofman, the latest film from filmmaker Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine, The Place Beyond the Pines), marking his return to grounded, character-focused storytelling — this time through the lens of a stranger-than-fiction crime tale.

Starring Channing Tatum as Jeffrey Manchester, Roofman is based on the bizarre true story of an ex-Army Ranger who famously robbed a string of McDonald’s locations by cutting through their roofs — earning the nickname that now serves as the film’s title. The trailer introduces Manchester as a troubled yet charismatic figure whose criminal exploits take an even more surreal turn when he hides out for months inside a suburban Toys “R” Us while planning his next move.

The film appears to be equal parts heist thriller, offbeat character drama, and romantic complication, as Manchester’s secret life becomes entangled with Leigh (Kirsten Dunst), a single mother drawn into the emotional fallout. What begins as an unusual survival story seems to veer into something more emotionally charged—and potentially tragic—as his double life begins to unravel.

The supporting cast is notably stacked, featuring Ben Mendelsohn, LaKeith Stanfield, Juno Temple, Melonie Diaz, Uzo Aduba, Jimmy O. Yang, Lily Collias, and Peter Dinklage. The film’s script is co-written by Cianfrance and Kirt Gunn.

The film is executive produced by Cianfrance and Tatum as well as Jonathan Montepare, Charles M. Barsamian, Chris Parker, Tyler Zacharia, Matthew von Waaden, D. Mark von Waaden, Jack Selby, Rick Covert, and Sam Romano, with production handled by Jamie Patricof, Lynette Howell Taylor, Alex Orlovsky, Duncan Montgomery, and Dylan Sellers.

Roofman is expected to hit theaters soon.
