Chris Hemsworth looks set to step back into Tyler Rake’s boots for Extraction 3, the next instalment in the hugely successful Netflix and AGBO action franchise, Deadline reports. Sam Hargrave (Kill Them All, “The Last Frontier”) is also confirmed to return to helm the project, with both Idris Elba and Golshifteh Farahani also confirmed to return in some form.
David Weil (“Citadel”, “Hunters”) is writing the screenplay, with production scheduled to begin this summer. Anthony Russo, Joe Russo, Angela Russo-Otstot, Michael Disco, and Ari Costa are producing through AGBO, while Hemsworth and Benjamin Grayson produce for Wild State alongside Hargrave, Patrick Newall, Eric Gitter, and Peter Schwerin. Steven V. Scavelli is executive producing.
The Extraction series is based on the graphic novel Ciudad by Ande Parks, with a story by Parks, Joe Russo, and Anthony Russo, and illustrations by Fernando Leon Gonzalez.
Plot details for Extraction 3 are yet to be disclosed, but the franchise follows Tyler Rake, a black-ops mercenary, on high-risk extraction missions. Both Extraction and Extraction 2 appeared on Netflix’s Most Popular English Films list. The first film broke viewership records for Netflix when it debuted and earned two Critics Choice nominations, for Best Action Movie and Best Actor in an Action Movie for Hemsworth.
The original film debuted in spring 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. Following the success of the first film, the franchise returned with Extraction 2, which surpassed the streaming numbers of the debut installment.
Hemsworth’s involvement allowed the studio to schedule a summer shoot, coordinating with his other upcoming production, the Matt Ross-helmed New York crime movie Kockroach, which also stars Zazie Beetz, Taron Egerton, Channing Tatum, and Alec Baldwin.
Hemsworth and Grayson’s Wild State is a multiplatform production company that develops scripted, unscripted, and branded content across film, television, and digital platforms. Projects under Wild State include Limitless for Disney+/National Geographic, Crime 101 for Amazon, and the upcoming Corsair Code for Apple.
