Don’t Adjust Your Signal: The Undertone Trailer Broadcasts a Sinister Frequency of Grief and Faith

A chilling new trailer has just dropped for Ian Tuason’s The Undertone, and it’s every bit as unnerving as fans of atmospheric horror could hope for. The film is set to premiere at this year’s Fantasia International Film Festival on July 27th and 29th, and if the trailer is any indication, audiences should brace for a haunting deep dive into grief, faith, and the terrors that lurk just beyond the veil.

Tuason — already a formidable voice in the sci-fi world — makes what looks to be a bold directorial debut here, blurring the fragile boundaries between life and death with an eerie elegance.

The story follows in-house skeptic, Evy, played by genre favorite Nina Kiri (The Handmaid’s Tale, The Heretics), as she cares for her dying mother in their increasingly oppressive home. Her only solace comes from co-hosting a paranormal podcast, The Undertone, with her friend Justin. While Evy remains skeptical on-air, Justin leans into the supernatural — a dynamic that gets tested when the pair receives ten chilling audio files from an anonymous source. These sound clips, filled with distorted nursery rhymes and inexplicable noises, document the strange bedtime rituals of a couple named Mike and Jessa. As the recordings grow more disturbing, so do the events unfolding in Evy’s own home.

Produced by Dan Slater and Cody Calahan, The Undertone marks the first collaboration between Slaterverse Pictures, Black Fawn Films, and KINO Studios — the start of a multi-film partnership between Black Fawn and KINO focused on horror and thriller content. Executive producers include Chad Archibald, Daril Fannin, Brit MacRae, Anthony Eu, Douglas Lee, Al Akdari, Charles Bern, Mathew Sterling, David Sproat, and Ian Tuason.

With the trailer now online and its premiere just days away, The Undertone is shaping up to be one of Fantasia’s most talked-about entries. We’ll leave you to enjoy the trailer below, and you can check out all the screening info on the Fantasia Festival site.
