Kula Shaker are gearing up to release their eighth album, Wormslayer, on 30 January 2026, with the line-up that powered their breakthrough years back in harness: Crispian Mills on vocals and guitar, Alonza Bevan on bass, Paul Winterhart on drums, and Jay Darlington once again manning the Hammond. Long-time fans can take comfort in knowing that their distinctive alchemy still holds. The spark that once lifted them clear of the Britpop scrum feels fully rekindled, with this new chapter finding them back in a remarkably fertile creative phase.
The singles released so far – “Good Money,” “Charge of the Light Brigade” and “Broke as Folk” – are classic Kula Shaker fare: harmonies rising and falling like incantations, bursts of colour and rhythmic swagger. Yet early descriptions of the album’s deeper cuts hint at an even broader palette: pastoral folk on “Dust,” gothic crooning on “Little Darling,” with echoes of Roy Orbison and The Doors, and a title track apparently poised to unfurl into full mantra-metal flight. Mills has also revealed that “Broke as Folk” forms part of a wider narrative thread running through Wormslayer — a mythic or moral spine yet to be fully disclosed.
If these early harbingers are anything to go by, the album promises to capture Kula Shaker’s restless, live-wire energy, cranking up anticipation for their UK headline dates next February. So, with Wormslayer fast approaching, CinemaChords’s Howard Gorman sat down with Mills to talk through the band’s recently renewed creative burst, the ideas binding together a record that shifts so freely between moods, the challenge of making art in an age shaped as much by turbulence as by technology, and what fans can expect from next year’s shows, which will feature an immersive lighting experience from The Mad Alchemist Liquid Light Show.
Reflecting on the months ahead, Mills says: “I hope people enjoy the twists and turns that this new record takes you on. We always loved those psychedelic records that had great songs, great production, great storytelling, and took you on a journey. We always dig into that kind of experience, because we’re that kind of band. Kula Shaker has a life of its own. We’re just passengers, watching it happen in real time.”
