Coralie Fargeat’s ‘The Substance’ to Close Out Edinburgh International Film Festival Midnight Madness Strand

Coralie Fargeat‘s (Revenge) latest outing, The Substance, which generated all kinds of buzz after premiering at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, will close out the new Midnight Madness program at the upcoming 77th Edinburgh International Film Festival.

Written and directed by Fargeat, the film stars Demi Moore (Corporate AnimalsIndecent Proposal), Margaret Qualley (Once Upon a Time in HollywoodPoor Things, Death Note), and Dennis Quaid (Cold Creek Manor, D.O.A, The Intruder). Describing The Substance, EIFF director Paul Ridd said, “It’s hard to describe this masterpiece, but if we said that it somehow fuses David Cronenberg, Brian Yuzna, and Sunset Boulevard into a completely unique, sensory attack on hypocrisy and sexism, then that would only go half-way to describing the wild thrills that await the willing and the eager. Bring it on.”

The EIFF screening will mark the film’s UK premiere with MUBI releasing the film in the UK at a yet-to-be-confirmed later date.

The festival’s all new Midnight Madness strand will run throughout the festival this August with the festival also having revealed a special Midnight Madness preview screening of Chris Nash’s ingeniously immersive, shrewdly savage shockathon (our full review here) In A Violent Nature on Thursday 11 July at the Cameo Cinema. The full EIFF programme will launch on Wednesday, July 10th, with tickets going on sale the following day.

Commenting on today’s announcement, Ridd added, “Having experienced the legendary Midnight Madness premiere of Coralie Fargeat’s ferocious debut Revenge at Toronto a few years back, I am truly honored that our first ever Midnight Madness strand at EIFF will close out with her wildly entertaining second film The Substance.”

The Edinburgh International Film Festival will run from August 15 to August 21, 2024.
