‘ASH’ Movie Review – A Paranoia-Fueled Descent into All-Immersive Lovecraftian Cosmic Horror

Flying Lotus‘ Ash delivers a distinctive take on space horror, drawing inspiration from classics like Event Horizon and Pandorum, while weaving in subtle nods to Carpenter’s The Thing and embracing a richly cosmic, Lovecraftian atmosphere. The film’s immersive visuals are a standout, masterfully evoking a sense of isolation and mounting unease on a distant planet. Lotus’ direction skillfully navigates both the chilling horror sequences and the intricately layered flashbacks, amplifying the narrative’s visceral intensity.

Eiza González delivers a compelling and intense performance as Riya, a woman grappling with amnesia in the wake of a brutal tragedy. She brings real nuance to the role, capturing Riya’s vulnerability and escalating sense of dread as she gradually pieces together the fragmented memories of her past.

Aaron Paul also proves a strong performance as Brion, a fellow officer who arrives after a distress call is received. His emotional and tense interactions with González add depth to the mystery and really highlight the mounting tension between the characters. While the film unfolds at a deliberate pace, especially in the first three-quarters, the compelling performances and mounting sense of unease pull you deeper into its mystery, leaving you hanging on every moment, desperate to uncover the chilling truth that lurks beneath the surface of this forsaken planet.

Flying Lotus’ distinct musical sensibility adds another layer to the film’s immersive atmosphere. His score, paired with a meticulously crafted soundscape—including a unique alien language I won’t spoil here—enhances the film’s eerie tone. The auditory experience is essential, pulling the audience further into its unsettling world and making it well worth sticking around through the credits.

Ultimately, Ash is a visually striking film anchored by Eiza González’s captivating performance. Her portrayal of Riya is a standout, perfectly capturing the character’s internal conflict and unraveling psyche. The film’s exploration of memory, identity, and cosmic dread offers a wildly thought-provoking experience. Fans of enigmatic, paranoia-filled space horror will revel in Ash‘s blend of classic genre elements and unique artistic vision, with the film offering a chilling, unforgettable journey through the vast, uncharted depths of the cosmos.

VERDICT:

#AshMovie is In Theaters March 21.
