INTERVIEW: Chai Hansen and Kiah McKirnan on “NIGHT SKY” and its Exploration of Aging, Grief, Undying Love and Acceptance

Prime Video‘s roster of original and compelling new series keeps growing and one of the most exciting series about to debut on the streaming platform is the sci-fi drama “Night Sky” (formerly known as “Lightyears”).

Created by Holden Miller and Daniel C. Connolly for Amazon Studios and Legendary Television (“Carnival Row”, “Paper Girls”), “Night Sky” stars Academy Award® winners Sissy Spacek (“Homecoming”, Carrie, The Old Man and The Gun), J.K. Simmons (The Tomorrow War, “Invincible”), Chai Hansen (“The Newsreader”), Kiah McKirnan (“Mare of Easttown”), Julieta Zylberberg (The Invisible Look), Rocío Hernández (“La caída”) and Adam Bartley (“Longmire”). The series revolves around Irene (Spacek) and Franklin York (Simmons), a couple who, years earlier, discovered a buried chamber in their backyard that somehow leads to a mysterious deserted planet. They secretly kept their discovery to themselves but when an enigmatic young man enters their lives, the Yorks’ quiet existence soon takes an unexpected turn… and the mystifying chamber they thought they knew so well turns out to be much more than they could have ever imagined.

With all eight episodes of the first season set to premiere exclusively on Prime Video this Friday, May 20, CinemaChords’s Howard Gorman sat down with two of the series’ regular cast members, Hansen and McKirnan to discuss how the sci-fi aspect of the show serves as a perfect segue to address themes of loss, grief, trust, identity and the culture gap and what they learned from working with such seasoned professionals as Spacek and Simmons.
