Nicolas Cage to Resink His Fangs Into Vampire Lore as Dracula in ‘Renfield’

“Do you believe in destiny? That even the powers of time can be
altered for a single purpose?”
Count Dracula

Despite shying away from blockbuster tentpoles since 2011’s Ghost Rider:
Spirit of Vengeance
, sui generis, Oscar-winning thesp, Nicolas
Cage
has continued to work like a Trojan, carving himself quite
the niche in indie art-house cinema.

But, it looks like the time has come for him to sink his teeth back into the big league, having signed on to play none other than Count Dracula in Universal Pictures’ monster movie, Renfield. The film will be directed by Chris McKay (The Tomorrow War, The Lego Batman Movie) whilst Nicholas Hoult has also signed on to play the titular character, Vlad’s infamous acolyte and henchman.

What direction this new adaptation will take has yet to be disclosed but,
according to THR, Ryan Ridley (“Ghosted”, “Rick and
Morty”) wrote the script based on an original story outline from Robert
Kirkman (“The Walking Dead”) which is a “modern-day adventure
story that is comedic in tone.”

McKay and Kirkman are producing along with David Alpert, Bryan Furst and
Sean Furst. McKay’s producing partner, Samantha Nisenboim, is exec producing.

Having previously sunk his teeth into a similarly bloodthirsty role as
alphabet-reciting Count Peter Loew in 1988’s Vampire’s Kiss, we’ve long since
yearned to see him take on another sanguisuge character so we couldn’t be
happier to hear this news. And if you have yet to see Vampire’s Kiss, arguably
Cage‘s most off-the-wall character to date, then we’ll leave you with the
trailer, which we’re sure will leave you thirsting for more…
