Following 2011’s Oscar-nominated success that was The Descendants, director Alexander Payne returns with the black and white road movie, Nebraska. Based on Bob Nelson‘s screenplay, the Nebraska born director captures the effortless acting of a father (Bruce Dern) who, convinced of having won a million dollars, drives off into a vanishing Midwest to claim his dubious fortune accompanied by his estranged son (Wil Forte).
Dern plays the taciturn Woody (for which he won best acting prize at this year’s Cannes Film Festival) heading off on this 750-mile journey that seems unlikely given the fact he can barely waddle down the road a few blocks with outthe help of a few tipples to get him on his way. Saturday Night Live alum, Forte, known for the terminally underrated MacGruber character and Paul in 30 Rock bids farewell to the comedy routines for something steering much closer to drama as he plays Dern’s baffled son, David who tags along for the ride out of his growing concerns for his carousing father’s state of mind.
When Woody and David stop off at their hometown of Hawthorne word of Woody’s fortune gets around, instantly converting him into a returning hero, opening a peephole into the unseen lives of David’s parents and a past much more alive than he ever could have imagined.
