MUBI Acquires Coralie Fargeat’s Body Horror Feature ‘THE SUBSTANCE’ Ahead of Cannes World Premiere

MUBI, the global film distributor, production company and streaming servicehas acquired worldwide rights for Coralie Fargeat‘s (Revenge, “Sandman”) forthcoming body horror movie The Substance, a Working Title Films production, ahead of its in Competition world premiere at this year’s 77th Cannes Film Festival.

Written and directed by Coralie Fargeat (Revenge), the film stars Demi Moore (Corporate Animals, Indecent Proposal), Margaret Qualley (Once Upon a Time in HollywoodPoor Things, Death Note), and Dennis Quaid (Cold Creek Manor, D.O.A, The Intruder). And whilst little has been revealed regarding the plot, At the Cannes festival press conference, the festival director Thierry Frémaux explained how, “the film is a genre film, a gore film, an assertive body horror. Wear protection, because at the end there is a lot of blood on the screen…. It looks as if it’s gushing through the screen!”

Director of Photography on the film is Benjamin Kracun (Promising Young Woman, Beast), co-editors are Coralie Fargeat, Jerome Eltabet (Revenge) and Valentin Féron, music is composed by Raffertie (I May Destroy You), Production Design is led by Stanislas Reydellet (Le Bal Des Folles), and Costume Design is by Emmanuelle Youchnovski (Café de Flore, La belle époque). 

MUBI will retain all rights in UK & Ireland, North America, Germany, Austria, Latin America and Benelux, where they will release theatrically this year. MUBI has also acquired the rights for Turkey and India. The Match Factory is handling sales for all other territories.

The Substance is produced by Coralie Fargeat, and Eric Fellner and Tim Bevan for Working Title. Alexandra Loewy of Working Title and Nicolas Royer of A Good Story are Executive Producers.
