Dutch Mustard, the London-based project of Netherlands-born Sarah-Jayne Riedel (aka SJ), has unveiled her latest single, “Life,” via DM Records, setting the stage for an August headline tour.
Known for weaving ethereal dream-pop textures with 90s alt-rock grit and shoegaze atmospherics, Dutch Mustard shifts gears on “Life” with a taut, skittish energy that cuts through her usual hazy soundscapes. Driving drums and an infectious urgency underpin lyrics that explore the chaos of a messy personal moment. As SJ puts it, “Life is the soundtrack to that heartbreak you should’ve seen coming, when everything gets so chaotic and absurd, all you want to do is tap out for a minute.”
Co-written alongside Dean James Barratt (Alewya, Rag’n’Bone Man) and Craigie Dodds (Gorillaz, Sugababes, Amy Winehouse), the track is paired with a video that balances gritty indie nightlife visuals with sharp, mainstage dance choreography—capturing the tension between raw reality and polished performance.
Dutch Mustard slots into a vibrant new wave of artists fusing visceral, high-energy live shows with classic alt-rock DNA, aligning with acts like Wolf Alice, Gretel Hanlyn, and NewDad.
Since her 2022 debut EP An Interpretation of Depersonalisation—which garnered early support from BBC Radio 1’s Jack Saunders and even Iggy Pop—SJ has been steadily building momentum. Her 2023 Beauty EP kept the buzz alive with spins from Lauren Laverne on BBC 6 Music and endorsements from Huw Stephens, Don Letts, and Amy Lamé. UK press heavyweights like The Independent, The Line of Best Fit, CLASH, DORK, and Notion have championed her work, while The Grammy Awards Site named her one of “6 Female Fronted Acts Reviving Rock,” alongside Wet Leg and others.
Dutch Mustard’s 2024 singles “Loser” and “Thank You” earned regular airplay on BBC 6 Music thanks to indie legend Steve Lamacq. SJ also recently featured in a Radio X interview and session with John Kennedy, and played a London date for Kennedy’s The Season Festival. For a taste of her live chops, check out her “Loser” session for Herts University’s Propeller series here.
Beyond the music, SJ has been honing her craft behind the scenes as an engineer at a top North London studio and creative film space, juggling work across music, film, and TV. This hands-on immersion with creative peers has fueled her evolution as a musician and bandleader. With a recent successful US run—including a set at New York’s cult showcase festival New Colossus—Dutch Mustard is primed to keep making waves. The “Life” single and forthcoming tour are just the latest chapter in SJ’s ongoing rise.
