Possession, supernatural beings and evil spirits have been breaking into the homes of the horror genre for some years. After the success of Paranormal Activity in 2007, people have been yearning for something equally sinister to take them by surprise. The Conjuring, released earlier this year, opened up that door and left us wanting more, and now we are given Devil’s Due.
From the directors of V/H/S Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett we are provided with a rather strange twist on a newlyweds honeymoon – resulting in the devil having a due date! Starring newcomers Allison Miller and Zach Gilford as the happy couple, the trailer artistically shows us that not all is ‘happy’ after being blessed with a baby. Not only do they have to deal with an unexpected pregnancy but some very strange forces are at play. Dark spirits that make pictures smash to the ground, doors slam, priests vomit blood and elongate jaws – wait, haven’t we seen this all before? With pioneers of such a genre as The Exorcist (1973), Rec (2007), The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005) and indeed any Japanese horror that involves a couple, it’s about time that horror fans get what they want.
After the disappointment of Insidious 2, Devil’s Due has a lot to prove when it comes to the genre as a whole. Devil’s Due is out on the 16th January 2014 and from looking at the trailer beware of strange people at your wedding, and we don’t mean your dad sliding along the dance floor with a tie around his head!
