The Guest to open Frightfest 2014

For those of you who don’t know what it is, Film4 Frightfest is it’s an annual film festival held in central London over the August Bank Holiday weekend. As the name indicates, the primary focus is on the horror genre but has also included films which are not horror centric. The festival has been host to many personal appearances by those involved with the making of the films being shown. Notable attendees include George A. RomeroRob ZombiePaul W. S. AndersonDanny BoyleGuillermo del ToroUwe BollEli Roth, John Landis and Tobe Hooper.

Last year, the festival entered its 14th year and opened with the world premiere of The Dead 2: India and Big Bad Wolves. The films shown on the main screen during the festival included You’re Next, Hatchet III, V/H/S/2, Cheap Thrills, In Fear, Banshee Chapter and Jim Mickle‘s remake of the Mexican thriller We Are What We Are. The Discovery screens saw some truly outstanding films which included Contracted, Willow Creek, The Borderlands, and the side-splitting funny zombie horror Stalled.

As for this year’s festival we have already had news that the festival will be changing location from the magnificent Empire Cinema to VUE in the West End of London but as for the festival line-up we are still waiting with bated breath. So you can imagine our excitement when the folk behind the Film4 Frightfest twitter announced the first film which will open this years festival.

Directed and Written by the team behind You’re Next, The Guest tells the story of the Peterson family who are struggling over their loss of their oldest son who went to war in Afghanistan. So when their door is darkened by David, a steely eyed and charismatic soldier (Dan Stevens) appears with the news that he has arrived to fulfil a promise he made to his fallen comrade, he is welcomed into their home. His arrival sparks a sinister chain of events which leave Anna and Luke, the younger siblings of the family, with suspicions that David might not be what he appears to be.

Adam Wingard said today: “FrightFest movie goers are some of the most diehard genre enthusiasts in the world. Naturally i am delighted that The Guest will be opening this year’s festival”.

Alan Jones, co-director of FrightFest added: “Film4FrightFest has a grand tradition of always opening its banner August event with a forward-looking and directional attraction. So we couldn’t be more delighted to showcase Adam Wingard’s dazzling horror thriller THE GUEST to put the stamp of approval on our move to the Vue cinema in Leicester Square”.

We are thrilled by this announcement as we not only loved You’re Next but we have become fans of Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett‘s work so we’re interested to see what their homage to 1980s action flicks has to offer. As for the two’s attendance, this has not been confirmed… until now (kinda).
