The Lathums usher in 2025 with fresh energy and an upbeat, optimistic vibe in Heartbreaker, the first single from their upcoming third album, Matter Does Not Define (out March 7 via Modern Sky). The track marks a shift for the band, as they break free from their previous introspective and brooding style, embracing a more liberated, feel-good sound.
Heartbreaker is fast-paced and punchy, brimming with infectious indie-pop hooks that capture the spirit of self-confidence and personal freedom. Lead singer and lyricist Alex Moore explains, “I wanted to break away from my usual style, which tends to be more introspective and fictional … Lately, people seem to have really been embracing their true selves more, with a sense of pride and confidence. So, I wanted to create a feel-good song that captures that energy, something empowering that people can sing along to and feel unstoppable – like they’re owning who they are.”
This shift in tone is a stark contrast to the darker, more emotional Long Shadows, which closed out 2024 for the band. That track, with its raw and introspective lyrics, showcased a deeper, more vulnerable side of Moore, providing a powerful contrast to the energetic freedom of Heartbreaker. It was a clear statement of growth for the band, showing their ability to move between the emotional extremes of brooding ballads and anthemic pop tracks.
In addition to new music, The Lathums have been deeply engaged with their community. In December 2024, the band played a sold-out, intimate show in their hometown of Wigan, raising £2,500 for their Chance To See charitable fund. The gig, which took place at Feast At The Mills, was a way for the band to give back to their supporters while also helping to fund cultural opportunities for young people. “We’re always trying to spread the love we receive and offer hope where it’s needed most,” says Moore.
Looking ahead to 2025, The Lathums are preparing to hit the road on their Matter Does Not Define tour. The tour will showcase material from the new album as well as fan favorites from their chart-topping albums How Beautiful Life Can Be (2021) and From Nothing To A Little Bit More (2023). With sold-out dates already in Glasgow and Newcastle, it’s clear the band’s popularity is continuing to rise. Their upcoming shows promise an energetic mix of the anthemic tracks that have earned them a loyal following.
