The wait is over! Three years since their last release, Sea Fever has made a triumphant return with their synth-heavy single, “Loose Cut” – a track that pulses with a fresh, exhilarating energy while carrying an underlying chill of brooding menace. The release marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the band, as they also announce their signing to emerging Stockport indie label Cosmic Glue.
“Loose Cut” is Sea Fever at their most dynamic, weaving together the collective creative energy of their five impassioned members. From its opening beats to its shimmering synth lines, the track blends hard, binary rhythms with neon sparks of melody, creating a “technicolour soundscape” that’s both hypnotic and urgent. It’s a bracing mix of electrifying experimentation and catchy hooks, with the band continuing to carve out their distinct identity in the world of indie, electro, and dance-pop.
A Defining Moment for Sea Fever
Vocalist Beth Cassidy, whose commanding presence continues to be a defining feature of Sea Fever’s sound, describes the track as an exploration of a “fractious and unpredictable state of mind.” She explains: “It was written as a series of one-liners, which seemed to suit the energy of the track. The music has a lot to say and kind of speaks for itself, so I peppered it with just a few of my own thoughts.”
Bassist and co-songwriter Tom Chapman (also known for his work with New Order) explains that the track is a “collage of ideas without any rules,” adding that it’s a departure from their previous work, but in a way that feels exciting. He says, “It’s very different for us but in a good way.”
For guitarist Iwan Gronow, who’s no stranger to indie circles having previously played with Haven and Johnny Marr, “Loose Cut” is a song that transports listeners, offering a break from the mundane and the chaos of everyday life. He says, “We wanted to come back with a song that would make the listener forget, even for just a minute. To transport them away from a routine or a daily struggle, like a fight or flight song in a testing moment.”
“There is a certain chaotic beauty in it that sums up present day,” he continues. “We are bombarded by information and it’s hard to absorb everything and connect properly. For us, it’s been a long road to this release. We’ve had to fight for our music to be out in the open, so there’s a sense of achievement. At times we thought this might not be the case.”
New Era, New Sound
Sea Fever, composed of longtime New Order members Tom Chapman and Phil Cunningham, Iwan Gronow from Haven, Beth Cassidy of Section 25, and drummer Elliot Barlow (formerly of Brix and The Extricated), have always carried the weight of their musical legacy. But with “Loose Cut,” they’ve shifted gears into a new territory – a synth-driven track that feels as fresh and current as it is rooted in their history.
Fans of their debut album Folding Lines (2021) can expect more urgent, dance-floor-ready tunes to complement the new single. The band’s live shows, known for their electrifying performances, are now set to feature both new material and fan favorites, making each upcoming gig an unmissable event.
