Sony Pictures Releasing has dropped the first full trailer for Heart Eyes, a slasher comedy from Josh Ruben (Scare Me, Werewolves Within) that’s set to bring a bloody twist to your Valentine’s Day plans in which no couple is safe. Ruben, who calls this his “most challenging genre-bender” yet, combines his love of horror with the sugar-sweet world of romantic comedies, making Heart Eyes a Valentine’s treat with a sharp, cutting edge.
Directed by Ruben from a screenplay co-written by Christopher Landon and Michael Kennedy (Freaky, It’s a Wonderful Knife, Time Cut) and Phillip Murphy (Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard), the film stars Olivia Holt (“Cruel Summer”, Totally Killer) and Mason Gooding (Scream franchise, Y2K) as co-workers who are falsely assumed to be a couple by the infamous “Heart Eyes Killer.” This ruthless murderer has spent multiple Valentine’s Days stalking and slaying romantic duos, and now has set Olivia and Mason’s charaters in his sights.
The movie also features a talented ensemble cast, including Gigi Zumbado (The Price We Pay, Tone-Deaf), Ben Black (Black Christmas 2019), Jordana Brewster (Random Acts of Violence, The Faculty), and Devon Sawa (Chucky, Final Destination), guaranteeing that whether you’re young or veteran in the horror game, this film has you covered.
Ruben explains the genesis of the project with passion: “My love of horror is rivaled only by my love of romantic comedies. My most challenging genre bender to date: a brutal slasher in a nostalgic rom-com universe.”
The film, produced by Spyglass Media Group and Divide/Conquer, was shot in New Zealand in June 2024 with cinematographer Stephen Murphy behind the lens. The movie will be distributed by Screen Gems through Sony Pictures Releasing in the United States and globally by Republic Pictures.
With a production team brimming with slasher veterans, including producers Greg Gilreath & Adam Hendricks (The Voyeurs, M3GAN), and all manner of inventive kills, Heart Eyes looks poised to become the perfect annual blood-soaked go-to Valentine’s Day flick. Get ready to fall head over heels for Heart Eyes when is hits theaters on February 7, 2025, just in time for a killer date night.
