The slasher genre, like a phoenix rising from a pile of VHS tapes, never gets old, constantly reinventing itself to deliver that suspenseful, terrifying, blood-soaked thrill. Enter Neon‘s Hell of a Summer — the latest film set to take the blood-soaked baton and run with it. After debuting at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival, it’s already been touted as a contender to redefine the slasher game for the new decade.
Scheduled for theatrical release on April 4th, 2025, Hell of a Summer blends the classic elements of the slasher genre with a distinctive dark humor. Directed by Finn Wolfhard (“Stranger Things”) and Billy Bryk (When You Finish Saving the World), who also co-write and star in the film, it reflects the duo’s deep appreciation for the genre, resulting in a work that serves as both a tribute to and a fresh reimagining of the slasher tradition.
The story unfolds at Camp Pineway, a seemingly idyllic summer retreat that swiftly descends into a nightmare. Fred Hechinger (Gladiator 2, Fear Street) stars as Jason Hochberg, a 24-year-old camp counselor whose role extends way beyond managing his younger colleagues when a masked killer begins picking off the counselors one by one.
The film boasts a fantastic ensemble cast, including Abby Quinn (Knock at the Cabin), D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai (“Reservation Dogs”), Pardis Saremi (“Death and Other Details”), Rosebud Baker (“Life & Beth”), and Adam Pally (Sonic the Hedgehog 3, “Fubar”).
Speaking with CinemaChords, Wolfhard and Bryk delved into why the slasher genre continues to slice its way into audiences’ hearts. They discussed the elements that make the sub-genre timeless, and how their passion for the classics fueled their drive to offer something fresh — all while staying true to the blood-spattered roots that have kept summer camps dangerously entertaining for decades.
