Top 5 Movie Racers in Anticipation of Neill Blomkamp’s Gran Turismo

Everyone knows that every awesome action movie has a truly spectacular chase sequence at its heart. Who can forget Steve McQueen driving his Ford Mustang in Bullitt? The late Paul Walker putting his foot down in The Fast and the Furious franchise? Or perhaps it is Chris Hemsworth in Rush that floats your boat? Either way, an adrenaline fueled car chase/race scene is a certified staple of any decent action film.

On 9 August, 2023, the director Neill Blomkamp‘s (District 9, Elysium) anxiously awaited Gran Turismo, chronicling the tale of a teenage Gran Turismo player whose gaming skills won a series of Nissan competitions to become an actual professional racecar driver, will be racing into cinemas. Based upon the screenplay by Jason Hall (American Sniper, Thank You for Your Service) and Zach Baylin (Creed III, King Richard), and starring David Harbour (Violent Night, “Stranger Things”), Orlando Bloom (The Pirates of the Caribbean and Lord of the Rings franchises), Archie Madekwe (Midsommar, Voyagers), Darren Barnet (Roadhouse, “Never Have I Ever”), Geri Halliwell Horner (Crank: High Voltage, “Rainbow Woman”) and Djimon Hounsou (Blood Diamond, Constantine), Gran Turismo promises to deliver some pretty awesome high octane action scenes. So, to celebrate its release, we have put together the following list of our favourite racers who have proven to be quite the bad ass behind a steering wheel.

Taking our number five spot is Michael Caine as Charlie Crocker in the 1969 film The Italian Job. Not only does he steal four million dollars worth of gold from under the noses of the Italian Mafia, but he and his crew make an unforgettable getaway using three Mini Coopers, a couple of Jaguars and a bus.

Our number four slot features a heart-racing chase sequences from the better half of Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s Grindhouse, Death Proof. In the film Tracie Thoms plays Kim who is one hell of a driver as she controls the horsepower of her 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T in the final sequence in the film. It’s a stelar car chase sequence that does a complete 180 degree spin and is every bit exhilarating to watch.

What list of drivers could not be complete without a bit of eye candy? Ryan Gosling as Driver in Nicholas Winding Refn’s epic thriller Drive is a silently confident man who works during the day as a mechanic and stuntman for the local movie studio. At night he works as a getaway driver for criminals in LA. Handling the chase sequences in the film like a pro, Gosling steals our number three slot.

In second position is Jason Statham who raced to hollywood stardom with his turn as Frank Martin in 2002’s The Transporter. A triple threat, Martin is a sharp dresser, deadly at hand-to-hand combat and is one bad ass driver. With a finesse and some truly amazing race scenes, The Transporter was so successful that it spawned two further sequels.

Leaving The Transporter in the dust is The Fast and Furious franchise and with it comes our number one driver Dominic Toretto. Played by Vin Diesel, there’s no denying our love for him and and the Fast and Furious franchise which has continued to race to the top of the box office charts with each new instalment, and which we all know still has at least another couple of movies left in it thanks to a recent statement from Diesel himself.

Will Jann Mardenborough be able to rival our top five racers? You can find out for yourselves when Gran Turismo hits cinemas on 9 August, 2023.
