Finn Wolfhard and Billy Bryk Take a Stab at Summer Camp Slashers in First Trailer for NEON’s ‘HELL OF A SUMMER’

The slasher genre looks set to get a fresh, blood-soaked paint of coat, thanks to Neon‘s Hell of a Summer—the horror-comedy film already hailed as one of the best slashers of the decade following its premiere at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival. Now, with the release of its first official trailer, horror fans are getting their first look at what promises to be a wild, funny, and terrifying ride.

Directed by “Stranger Things” star Finn Wolfhard and Billy Bryk (When You Finish Saving the World) in their feature film debut, Hell of a Summer blends the best of slasher thrills with a unique sense of campy humor. The duo, who also co-wrote the film, take audiences to the seemingly peaceful Camp Pineway, where everything is not as it seems.

In Hell of a Summer, the action kicks off when 24-year-old camp counselor Jason Hochberg, played by Fred Hechinger (Gladiator 2, the Fear Street franchise), arrives at camp expecting to face the usual challenges of being out of sync with his much younger, more carefree colleagues. But things quickly take a darker turn as a masked killer begins picking off counselors one by one in brutal, gory fashion.

It’s a summer camp slasher that looks like it perfected the formula of striking the right balance between ’80s horror nostalgia and fresh, modern creativity.

Along with Wolfhard, Bryk and Hechinger, the film boasts an impressive ensemble cast featuring Abby Quinn (Knock at the Cabin, Torn Hearts), D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai (“Reservation Dogs”), Pardis Saremi (“Death and Other Details”), Rosebud Baker (“Life & Beth”), and Adam Pally (Sonic the Hedgehog 3, “Fubar”).

As producers, Wolfhard and Bryk collaborated with Fred Hechinger (also a producer) and Michael Costigan of Aggregate Films, as well as Jason Bateman, Drew Brennan, and Jay Van Hoy from Parts & Labor. The film was fully financed and executive produced by 30West.

The first trailer sets the tone perfectly, balancing humor with horrifying moments, all while giving fans a glimpse at the brutal slasher action and witty dialogue that looks set to make Hell of a Summer so unique.

Hell of a Summer hits theaters on April 18, 2025. Don’t miss out on what’s shaping up to be one of the most talked-about horror films of the year, and there are A LOT of horror movies on the horizon!
