Fans of “Dexter” have something to celebrate—“Dexter: Resurrection” is bringing back some familiar faces, with Emmy winners John Lithgow (The Old Man, Conclave) and Jimmy Smits (“East New York”, “Sons of Anarchy”) reprising their iconic roles. Lithgow will return as the chilling Trinity Killer, while Smits steps back into the shoes of Miguel Prado, the vengeful ADA turned criminal. The show has been filming in New York since January, and it’s already shaping up to be one of the most talked-about returns in the Dexter franchise.
For his portrayal of the Trinity Killer, Lithgow earned an impressive collection of accolades—including an Emmy, Critics’ Choice Award, and a Golden Globe nomination. Smits, on the other hand, scored an Emmy nomination for his unforgettable turn as Miguel Prado in Season 3. If you’re thinking, “But didn’t these characters die?”—you’re not alone. In true Dexter fashion, resurrection is in play, especially when it comes to fan-favorite characters like these. Lithgow even made a surprise appearance in flashbacks during Dexter: New Blood, and now, he’s back for good. Meanwhile, Smits’ return is a bit more of a surprise, though a young Miguel Prado did appear in Dexter: Original Sin, played by Nick Santucci.
Dexter: Resurrection continues the legacy of the franchise, helmed by Dexter veteran Clyde Phillips and starring Michael C. Hall, who will once again don the iconic role of the titular anti-hero. Joining Hall are returning favorites David Zayas as Detective Angel Batista, Jack Alcott as Dexter’s son, Harrison Morgan, and James Remar as Dexter’s father, Harry Morgan.
This season also introduces a stellar cast of new faces, including Uma Thurman as Charley, Peter Dinklage as Leon Prater, and Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine as Blessing Kamara. Other exciting additions include Kadia Saraf as Detective Claudette Wallace, Dominic Fumusa as Detective Melvin Oliva, and Emilia Suárez as Elsa Rivera. The show will also feature Neil Patrick Harris as Lowell, Krysten Ritter as Mia Lapierre, and Eric Stonestreet as Al, among others. And if you’re a fan of Dexter: New Blood, keep an eye out for David Magidoff, who will reprise his role as Teddy Reed from the Iron Lake Police Department.
Fans are also hoping that Lithgow’s return will connect to a potential prequel series about the early years of his sinister character, a project we first teased back in December. We’re also waiting for news on a potential second season of Dexter: Original Sin, which wrapped up its first season in February, led by Patrick Gibson and Christian Slater.
In terms of performance, Dexter: Original Sin made quite a splash, with the finale episode seeing a 27% increase in viewership compared to its December premiere. According to Deadline’s Katie Campione, the finale scored 2.68 million global viewers across Showtime and Paramount+, making it the most-streamed episode of the season.
Dexter: Resurrection is executive produced by Clyde Phillips and Michael C. Hall, with Scott Reynolds and Tony Hernandez also onboard as executive producers. The show is produced by Showtime Studios and Counterpart Studios, and is set to premiere this summer. Monica Raymund will direct four episodes, while Marcos Siega will direct six.
As we eagerly await Dexter: Resurrection, it’s clear that the Dexter universe is far from over. With its mix of old favorites, exciting new additions, and the signature Dexter suspense, this is one resurrection fans won’t want to miss.
