Courting’s “After You” Teases Explosive, Visceral Sound In Anticipation of Imminent Third Album Release

Liverpool’s electro-rock outfit Courting have kicked off 2025 with a bang, unleashing “After You,” the second tantalizing single from their highly anticipated third album, Lust for Life, Or: ‘How To Thread The Needle And Come Out The Other Side To Tell The Story’. Slated for release on March 14 via Lower Third, the album looks to deliver a thrilling blend of frenetic energy and dance-punk grooves, coupled with visceral, heavy-hitting intensity, if the two captivating singles unveiled so far are any indication.

“After You” follows the atmospheric first single “Pause At You,” giving fans another exciting preview of what’s to come on Lust for Life… The two tracks work together as a powerful pairing, sharing a distinct sonic DNA that runs throughout the entire album. While “Pause At You” pulses with frenetic energy and dance-punk grooves, “After You” cranks up the intensity, delivering a heavier, more visceral sound that pulls listeners deeper into the album’s complex and immersive atmosphere. These two singles are clear harbingers of the bold, dynamic direction the band is taking with the full release.

The duality of these songs is a reflection of the broader themes at play throughout the album. As Courting’s frontman Sean Murphy-O’Neill explains, Lust for Life… represents a daring evolution in the band’s approach, blending raw indie anthems with experimental, boundary-pushing sounds. The album condenses its creativity into eight meticulously crafted tracks, each designed to make an immediate impact. As Murphy-O’Neill puts it, Lust for Life… is “direct and succinct,” with the intent to “hit everyone in the face and leave.” And if these first two singles are anything to go by, Courting are poised to do just that.

With “After You,” Courting continue to explore themes of anxiety and paranoia, but this time with a more immersive production that wraps around you like a thick fog. The track features a driving rhythm section, hypnotic guitars, and an overwhelming sense of unease that lingers long after the final note fades. Murphy-O’Neill describes the track as “an exercise in direct songwriting,” aiming to craft something both straightforward and powerful. “We wanted the wall of guitars and the drums to feel almost hypnotic,” he says.

The song’s lyrics play with duality as well, allowing for multiple interpretations. “After You” can be read as either a stalkerish declaration or a romantic gesture — the ambiguity heightening its intensity and emotional pull. It’s a perfect example of the album’s focus on contrast, which is mirrored in the stark black-and-white music video directed by longtime collaborator Charlie Barclay-Harris. The video’s minimalist aesthetic amplifies the thematic tension of Lust for Life…, drawing the viewer deeper into the world Courting are creating.

As anticipation builds for the full album release on March 14, “After You” serves as a powerful reminder of why Courting have become one of the most exciting and unpredictable bands in the UK today. With Lust for Life…, they’re ready to push boundaries, explore new territories, and — in their words — make an immediate impact with their third LP.
