Butter Up, The Zutons Serve Up New Single ‘Popcorn’ Ahead of 2025 UK Headline Tour

After the critical success of their UK Top 10 album The Big Decider, The Zutons have just dropped their latest single, “Popcorn.” This marks the first new music from the band in over a year—and what better way to mark their return than with a Northern Music Award for Best Band, which they graciously accepted at Liverpool’s iconic Olympia Theatre last night.

But it’s not all awards and accolades for the indie-rock heroes. The past year has been a whirlwind of live shows, including a blazing set at Glastonbury’s Other Stage and an exhilarating opening stint for Paul Heaton on his sold-out arena tour. And now, with a new single in tow, The Zutons are gearing up for another UK tour, which kicks off next week and culminates in a homecoming show at Liverpool’s University Mountford Hall.

The band’s frontman, Dave McCabe, shared a refreshingly honest and introspective reflection on the inspiration behind “Popcorn.” In his own words:

“The song just fell out really. I wrote it in about 15 minutes! I didn’t really know what I was writing about or was even thinking about, but then when I played it to the band it made me realise that it’s just me asking my wife to take me to the pictures. I used to go a lot and I could relax in there. I think it’s something about the darkness and the way you don’t know what time of day it is, you’re just on ‘cinema time’ and you can forget all your woes and escape.”

It’s the kind of spontaneous creativity that only a band with years of experience and a deep love for what they do can pull off. “Popcorn” may have come to McCabe in a flash, but it’s a perfect blend of the familiar and the fresh—much like the band’s entire discography.
